Buying your first work vehicle: a guide for the newly self-employed

For many tradies, couriers, mobile service providers and contractors, the vehicle is the business. When you're newly self-employed, getting the first one right matters: it needs to do the job, fit your budget and be financed in a way that works while the business finds its feet.

Choose for the job, not the image

Start with what the work needs: payload, towing, cargo space, seats, fuel use and where you'll drive. A well-chosen, reliable vehicle that suits the work will usually serve a new business better than the flashiest option on the lot.

Budget for the full cost

The repayment is only part of it. Allow for:

  • Fuel and servicing
  • Comprehensive insurance, which lenders usually require on financed vehicles
  • Registration
  • Tyres and repairs
  • Fit-out items such as racks, canopies, toolboxes or shelving
  • Downtime if the vehicle is off the road

Decide whose name it goes in

Whether the vehicle sits in your own name or a company's affects the finance and how costs are handled. Our article on company versus personal ownership of business vehicles covers the trade-offs, and your accountant can advise what suits your structure.

How lenders look at new businesses

With little or no trading history, lenders focus more on you: your personal credit history, your financial position, your industry experience and the work you have lined up. Some specialist lenders offer low doc options. See our guides to finance for new businesses and low doc car loans for more detail.

Fit-outs and accessories

Where the supplier invoices them together, some lenders may include fit-out items in the same finance as the vehicle. It depends on the lender and the items, so ask before you commit.

Choose the structure with your accountant

Business vehicles are often financed through structures such as a chattel mortgage, finance lease or hire purchase. They're treated differently for tax and GST. We can explain how each works, but your accountant should advise on which suits you.
