Eyeing a new release? How to research it and budget for it

26 September 2026 · 5 min read

New SUV displayed under showroom lights

Every year brings a fresh wave of new cars, utes, hybrids and EVs to Australian showrooms. A new release can be exciting, but new also means less real-world information to go on. Here's how to research a new model properly and build a budget that covers the true cost of owning it.

Go to the source for Australian details

Specifications, variants and pricing can differ between countries. Use the manufacturer's Australian website and local dealers for confirmed local details, and treat overseas launches and previews as a guide only.

Check safety and efficiency information

ANCAP publishes safety ratings for many new vehicles sold in Australia, although a brand-new model may not have been rated yet. The Australian Government's Green Vehicle Guide lets you compare fuel consumption and emissions information.

Read and watch local reviews

Australian reviews and road tests show how a model handles local conditions, and owner feedback builds up over time. Test drive the car on roads you actually use before committing.

Budget for the full cost of ownership

For a new release, think beyond the sticker price:

  • Drive-away price, including on-road costs
  • Insurance, which can be higher for some new models
  • Servicing costs and intervals
  • Charging equipment or installation if it's an EV or plug-in hybrid
  • Depreciation, which is often steepest in the first years

Plan the finance early

If demand is high, stock can be limited and deliveries may take time. Having a pre-approval in place helps you move when your car becomes available. Keep in mind that approvals are valid for a limited time and are subject to the vehicle you choose. If you're weighing up whether to wait for a new model at all, see our article on waiting versus buying now.
